Celebrate Milestones With What You've Got

Shelter in Place birthdays can be a real bummer... or they can be really fun. It's up to you! We have had a couple SIP birthdays at my house and while the big parties we initially envisioned couldn't happen, we got creative and still had a great time.

For most parties the theme is what sets the tone. So whether you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary, or other life event, picking a theme for the celebration sets the scene. With limited options during quarantine the theme needs to be something you can create with what you have at home.

Halloween Decorations

My son turned 12 last week and as a Harry Potter fan I knew I could dig out the Halloween decorations to create a Hogwarts inspired birthday dinner feast. The only purchase I made was a box of LED taper candles and a roll of fishing line to create the "floating candles" everything else was stuff I had in the Halloween tubs in the garage - spider webs, skulls, backdrop to cover the window, etc.

Other Themes To Consider

If you are looking to create a themed celebration with things you have around the house, here is some inspiration to get those creative juices flowing...

  • Christmas In July - okay we hope we aren't sheltering in place in July but if you have a Christmas fan you can pull out those Santa decorations. Even if you don't want to go with full blown Christmas, you can pull out those holiday lights strands and create a pretty incredible lighting display.

  • Camping - Got a tent & sleeping bags? How about a fire pit? Viola! Camping themed fun in your backyard can be achieved. You can make smores, stargaze, tell ghost stories, etc.

  • "Drive In Movies - If you have a projector, hook that up outside and project a movie on your backyard fence or the side of your house. No projector? No problem, get creative in the house with individual "cars" made out of boxes or set up a tent (or fort) in your living room.

The point is to get creative! Chances are you have a bunch of stuff in your garage, or in that closet you keep meaning to clean out, that with a little imagination can turn into something really fun for your family.
