Self-Care: Kindness Toward Your Body & Mind

It’s far too easy to fall into a sedentary pattern now that we are all spending most of our days at home. A lot of us are finding ourselves working from laptops and sitting in chairs not meant to be sat in for 8 hours a day. Here are some tips on how to stay active while working from home. Self-care is more important than ever for your mind, body and soul.

Working on your laptop at home? Move the laptop to your countertop and stand for a while.

Take breaks every hour to walk around the house, check on the kids, toss the ball for your dog or stand and do ten squats before going back to your emails.

Time for lunch? It’s important to try to maintain a relatively normal schedule when working from home. When it’s lunchtime, go for a brisk walk around the block after you eat. Take the kids or pups along with you. Everyone can benefit from some fresh air and a little vitamin D from the sunlight.

Schedule time for a regular workout just as you would if you were going into work. Wake up early and go for a jog around the block. Not a morning person? After your regular work schedule, do an in-home workout in the evening. Jump on YouTube to follow along with a free group workout, take your bicycle out for a 30-minute neighborhood ride or break out those free weights collecting dust in the corner. Pinterest is a great place to give you ideas. Do you have a jump rope? No? Jumping jacks it is!

Not feeling very energized. How about yoga? Yoga is my favorite thing to do when I am feeling sluggish, stiff or just need to relax. The best part is no equipment is needed and there is no wrong way to do it. Just start with some basic stretches, you remember those stretches that you did before PE class as a kid. If you’ve ever taken a yoga class, then you know a few poses too. Listen to your body and feel the tight areas that need some extra love and attention through gentle stretching. Find a quiet corner, close the door to your bedroom or even go outside. I like to stream calming meditation music and spray the area with a lavender mist. Taking time to relieve some tension in those tight muscles will go a long way, even if you only have 20 minutes.

There are a lot of ways to stay active while you’re at home. How do you stay active? We would love to hear from you! Login to comment. Love it? Share it!
